Skelekitty as a Fitness Model!

I made my debut as the representative for Body Tribe, Krissi's favorite gym / art gallery / dog park. I had a complete BLAST participating as a chalk artist in my very first Chalk-It-Up to Sacramento fundraiser, a non-profit organization dedicated to funding children's art in our region. Check out the rest of the photos from Saturday.

I had tons of fun, despite Krissi's initial nervousness, having NEVER worked in the "chalk on sidewalk" medium. However, our sidewalk neighbor and new pal, Emily Elders, sure helped to get her drawing and kept us laughing all day long. Thanks to Darby Flynn for all the work she did (and for "volunteering" my services), to Body Tribe for letting us represent them and, most especially, to Krissi's long-suffering husband Ron for shuttling us around and lugging stuff across Fremont park (several times).

In a New Medium: Chalk!

It looks like yours truly will be making her very first skel-appearance at Sacramento's long-running sidewalk chalk art festival, Chalk-It-Up! To Sacramento on Labor Day weekend 2009.  The Chalk-It-Up! To Sacramento festival started 19 years ago, and was one of the very first "Sacramento things" Krissi and Ron did when they moved here in 2000.  Now here we are almost 10 years later and she'll be one of the artists.  Let's not lose focus here, though, since *I* will be the one immortalized in sidewalk chalk. Oh, wait a minute, maybe that's not so immortal after all.....

In any event, Krissi will be representing Body Tribe Fitness and wanted me to ask you what you think I should be doing to best represent this unusual midtown gym and its physical subculture.  All ideas are welcome!

xoxo

Skelekitty Uncovered!

This weekend, Krissi's first new depictions of yours truly in almost two years will make their debut at Side Show Studios' "Women Uncovered" show.

Final: Skelekitty angel
Final: Skelekitty demon

These two 11x14" original mixed-media paintings on wood will be going together as a set ($250 for both). However, Side Show Studios will also have some unframed prints of these babies on hand for a mere $15 each.

We hope to see you at the opening reception this Saturday with some Scary-Art Collective favorites like Broken Toyland & Jill Allyn, and crafting pals like Sacred Yoli & Evie's Ark.  However, it's a wonderful chance to see great art by newcomers to the show scene like Emma Rebekah Norris - I've featured her official Skelekitty altered domino jewelry, but just wait until you get a look at her mixed-media and assemblage pieces! This is definitely a must see show.

Opening reception: Saturday, May 9, 2009 from 6-10pm

Our May show focuses on new, rarely shown, and obscure female artists. Never before seen artists will stand side-by-side with well-known, but rarely seen artists to celebrate the strength and power of women. From subtle landscape paintings to bright abstract depictions of life, the works in this
all-female exhibition are as diverse and interesting as the artists themselves. Join us to celebrate the achievements and creativity of today's female artists!

Featured artists include: Alison Monk, Amy Fort, Broken Toyland, Cate Schmiedt, Char Hall, Cy Wylie, Darcy Dick, Dy Martin, Emma Rebekah Norris, errin lacy, Evie Turner, Gem Platte, Jacquelyn Bond, Jenvy Fox, Jill Allyn Stafford, Kanika Marshall, Karin Faringer, Kelly Croisdale, Kim Brownell, Krissi Sandvik, Larissa Tessler, Linda Nunes, Lori Ann Delappe-Grondin, Margaret Teichert, Michelle Cordova, Nicole Fox, Rachel McPherson, Robyn Slakey, Sandra O'Ben Rauch, Silly Girl Design, Summer Maddux, Tiffany Valdez, Yoli Manzo, and many more!

The art will be on display daily from 10am - 10pm through June 6, 2009.

A Skele-DOG, Too?

I know, I've been a pretty quiet kitty cat lately. After all of the excitement with the rubber stamps coming out, I just needed one long winter cat-nap under the quilts. Oh, and while we're on the subject of the rubber stamps, why haven't you ALL sent me photos of your awesome creations?? Hmmm?? If you've made anything using the stamps, send me photos and I'll post them here on my blog!

And now, on to the update portion of the post:

While I was napping, Krissi finally got around to making a portrait that had been commissioned way back at one of her very first Body Tribe art shows.  Back in Spring of 2006, the rockin' Allyson Seconds (aka kick-ass Allyson Goble), asked for a skellie-girl with a skele-dog based on Krissi's quilt, Does This Make Me Look Fat?  Way to jump right on those custom orders.

Although I tease about her lack of hustle to create a piece for Allyson, waiting almost three years gave Krissi the opportunity to get to know Al and Lulu both much better.  She trains with Al 3 times a week at Body Tribe, which includes warm-up and cool-down with Lulu and conversation in between sets of heavy squats and bench pressing.  Now that Abby the JRT (Jack Russell Terror) has come to live with Ron and Krissi, she also has some first hand knowledge of the wonders of dogs and "The R," which is code for the secret dog party locale off the grid and along the waterfront.  All of this experience led to the creation, at long last, of Wanna Go To The River?, a 12x24" mixed media on birch wood that incorporates many aspects of both Lulu's and Al's personalities.

For those of you who couldn't be less interested in dogs, skeletonized or otherwise, rest assured that I am not going anywhere.  T-Shirts ARE in development and a new Skelekitty piece is in the works for a big show and benefit coming to Sacramento in June (think: big cat, little cat; but that's all the hint you'll get for now)!
